WATCH: Karen Davila questions the Senate’s seeming double standards

ABS-CBN News anchor Karen Davila has weighed in on the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee’s hearing on the P6.4 billion shabu shipment from China.

Appearing on her DZMM TeleRadyo program Thursday, Davila issued a commentary pointing out the Senate’s apparent double standardx when it comes to dealing with issues involving members of the first family.

(Presidential son Paolo Duterte and his brother-in-law Mans Carpio were implicated by broker Mark Taguba in the BOC corruption scandal.)

“Pasensiya na ha kung sino ang matamaan. Wala akong kinakampihan. Ang sinabi ay you have to hold the first family at a higher standard. Babaguhin ko po. Kung kayo ay nasa first family, kayo ay nasa gobyerno. Dapat you are beyond reproach. Anong ibig sabihin? Walang duda sa inyo, walang duda sa pagkatao niyo, walang duda sa kredibilidad ninyo,” Davila said.

Davila also posed a challenge to the younger Duterte to commit himself to the committee’s investigation.

“Kung totoo na walang kinalaman si Paolo Duterte, vice mayor siya, binanggit ang pangalan niya sa Senado. Ito ang tanong ko: Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, hindi ako galit, this is not personal, bakit hindi kayo pumunta sa Senado? Ang pangalan niyo ay binabangit ng isang testigo,” she said, adding that Carpio should also come forward.

“Ang point ko eto lang: Bakit kung ordinaryong indibidwal kailangang sumipot sa Senado? Bakit po kayo hindi pwede? I’m sorry, vice mayor kayo. You’re an elected official. What spares you and not everybody else?” Davila asked.

She continued: “You are a public official, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte. It is your personal responsibility, in fact, to clarify your name, to clean it. Binabanggit kayo ng isang testigo under oath sa Senado.”

Davila also went on to slam some senators for their perceived biases and special treatment toward the first family.

“At eto naman ang mga senador…kahit elected official po o ordinaryong tao pantay-pantay kami. Hindi po porket miyembro ng first family hindi niyo ipapatawag. ‘Yan po ang opinion ng isang taxpayer na tulad ko. Sana patas po, ipatawag niyo lahat ng binabangit under oath sa Senado, walang takot ‘yan,” she said.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes on Thursday moved to invite the younger Duterte and Mr. Carpio to succeeding hearings, but Sen. Richard Gordon, the committee chair, refused to give in to his request.
