Rhea Santos is starting a new chapter in her Canadian broadcasting career.

The former GMA News anchor announced on Instagram that she is leaving OMNI News after five years to become the evening host at CityNews Vancouver, where she will deliver local Canadian news to a broader Canadian audience.

The move marks another milestone for Santos, who relocated to Canada in 2019 after an almost two-decade career at GMA-7, where she was best known as one of the longtime hosts of the long-running Unang Hirit.

In 2020, she joined OMNI Filipino, where she re-established her journalism career as anchor and video journalist, covering stories that matter to Filipinos in Canada.

In her announcement, Santos described the career move as both emotional and unexpected.

“I didn’t expect there’ll be another chapter, but life has ways of surprising you and leading you to something that moves you to tears,” she said.

Santos said signing off from OMNI is a bittersweet moment, describing the network as the place that gave her the opportunity to begin again after immigrating to Canada.

“OMNI was my answered prayer when I took a leap of faith and embraced change and uncertainty,” she said.

Although she’s leaving OMNI, Santos will remain within the same newsroom as she transitions to a different team at CityNews Vancouver. Both stations operate under the ownership of Rogers Sports & Media.

“An exciting chapter in my life is about to begin. I’m scared and I’m ready. I was led here and I’ve been called to do this,” she said.

Her final broadcast as anchor of OMNI Filipino will be on Friday, July 3.
