More than a year after joining One News as co-anchor of The Big Story, Ces Oreña-Drilon is set to take the helm of the broadcast on her own.

Starting Monday, June 1, Drilon will solo anchor the nightly newscast, while her co-anchors, Shawn Yao and Pauline Versoza, move to other assignments within the network.

Drilon has recently drawn renewed buzz and praise following her widely discussed interview with Atty. Jimmy Bondoc, legal counsel for embattled senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa. During the exchange, the veteran journalist roasted the musician-turned-lawyer on live television.

Kapatid executives are said to be optimistic that the strong audience engagement will continue, with Drilon expected to conduct more high-profile interviews moving forward.

Launched in 2016, The Big Story was originally part of the lineup of the now-defunct Bloomberg TV Philippines. The program remained on air even after the network’s rebranding to One News in 2018. Initially, it was anchored by veteran business journalist Roby Alampay.

Over the years, the program evolved from a single-anchor format into a co-anchor setup, and later into a multi-anchor format featuring Gretchen Ho, Shawn Yao, and Regina Lay.

One News is revamping its morning program with a refreshed format and a new all-female on-air team.

Starting Monday, June 1, Morning Matters will air in a split 1.5-hour format. It will initially run from 8:30 to 9:00AM, then return from 9:30 to 10:30AM. Sandwiched between the two blocks is the 30-minute business newscast Money Talks with Cathy Yang. which airs at 9AM.

Headlining the latest incarnation of the program will be the trio of Angela Lagunzad-Castro, Cesca Litton-Kalaw, and Pauline Verzosa, who officially take over from Gretchen Ho, who stepped down in January.

As part of the revamp, Lagunzad-Castro will sign off from News & Views, with its final broadcast airing tomorrow, May 29. Her co-anchor and real-life partner, Diego Castro, will move to the afternoon block to anchor its news bulletin.

Lagunzad-Castro will continue co-hosting TV5’s Gud Morning Kapatid while taking on her new role in Morning Matters. The Kapatid morning show ends at 8AM, allowing her enough time to transfer between programs.

Litton-Kalaw, who was last seen as co-anchor of Play by Play, brings extensive experience in sports journalism and live interviews. Kapatid executives see this, along with her friendly on-air presence, as being well-suited for the pace of morning television. She will initially focus on features and interviews, with a gradual transition into hard news, according to our sources.

Verzosa, currently interim host of Morning Matters, will bid adieu to The Big Story tomorrow night to focus on her new daytime assignment. She will join Lagunzad-Castro in handling the program’s news pieces, while also contributing to interviews and feature stories alongside Litton-Kalaw as the show adopts a lighter, more morning show format.

‘Frontline Pilipinas,’ ’24 Oras’ cover the Senate minority walkout

Tensions rose at the Senate on Tuesday evening as minority senators walked out of the plenary over a proposed rule that would allow senators to vote electronically during sessions.

The motion was proposed by Senator Rodante Marcoleta on May 11, the same day embattled Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa resurfaced after six months in hiding. The DDS senator is now the subject of an active arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

TV5 broke the news first through its evening newscast Frontline Pilipinas, with mobile journalist Marymon Reyes reporting live from the session hall. She initially had Senator Robin Padilla while on the air for his reaction, but she was eventually blocked by the Senate sergeant-at-arms.

“Naku, ayaw ni SP [Cayetano] ‘yung ganoong salita,” the senator was overheard saying when asked about remarks that the majority was allegedly trying to railroad the process.

“Hoy, huwag naman kayo ganyan magsalita, huwag naman,” Padilla was later overheard saying after being asked if it was related to reports that majority senators could face jail time.

The Office of the Ombudsman earlier said it was set to file a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan against Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Joel Villanueva over their alleged involvement in the multibillion-peso flood control scandal. Both Estrada and Villanueva are members of the majority.

GMA-7’s 24 Oras also reported on the developments, with Sandra Aguinaldo reporting live from the Senate and providing a summary of events.

Over at One News, Political Beat host Lourd De Veyra briefly paused his interview with University of the East law professor Eric De Torres to break the news and bring in Reyes for an update. The Big Story also had a longer discussion with the Kapatid reporter.
