Ivan Mayrina, who has filled in on 24 Oras Weekend since April, is now officially the program’s co-anchor, GMA-7 announced Thursday.

In a press release, the network announced his promotion, which has long been considered by Kapuso bosses following the departure of ex-broadcaster and soon-to-be senatorial candidate Jiggy Manicad.

You might recall that Mayrina topped our MNP Poll back in April — with people rooting for the young news veteran to be selected as Manicad’s successor — making his hiring a logical move for GMA-7.

Pia Arcangel, one of the original anchors of the weekend news broadcast, said she’s looking forward to be working again with her longtime TV partner, whom she worked with on programs such as Unang Hirit and 100% Pinoy.

“His journalistic background and years of experience will be a great asset to the show, and I trust that our partnership will bring viewers the same brand of credible and relevant information that our program has been serving every weekend, for the past eight years,” Arcangel said of Mayrina.

Talking about his new role, Mayrina said he considers it “a great privilege to be trusted” as the new primetime anchor.

“Alam kong malaking responsibilidad ang maging anchor ng flagship newscast ng GMA News and Public Affairs, pero tiwala ako na kaya ko itong tapatan ng karanasan, sipag, at dedikasyon,” he said. “Makakaasa ang mga manonood na lagi kong bitbit ang balitang tatak GMA: tama, patas, at walang kinikilingan.”
